1962 fue un año fascinante para Jamaica, el país se independizó de la Gran Bretaña y buscó de su propia independencia musical. Uno de los principales exponentes para forjar este nuevo sonido fue el ex policía Duke Reid, dueño del sello Treasure Isle.
